I'm a physician-scientist who investigates the delicate balance between immune tolerance and autoimmunity in the context of skin inflammation and alopecia. My lab gleans mechanistic insights in the complex interplay between the adaptive and innate immune system, and epithelial stem cells and stroma in skin. We leverage a novel technique to manipulate immune cells in a skin-specific manner with innovative experimental models of autoimmune alopecia to uncover mechanisms of epithelial stem cell loss and immune dysfunction. To translate our findings, we utilize patient-derived, archival specimens for single nuclear RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics to gain a better understanding of the pathogenesis of skin autoimmunity and alopecia.
As a dermatopathologist, my main clinical interest is to immunophenotype patient biopsy specimens to improve diagnostic accuracy and use biomarkers that that can potentially guide treatment decisions.
